Ukrainian Film Foundation and Nemiroff Company Announce the Start of the Ukrainian Films for the World Project

April 23, 2008, the Ukrainian Film Foundation and Nemiroff Company announced the official launch of a long-term project to support the national cinema industry, Ukrainian Films for the World. Head of the Board of Directors of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Oleksandr Maksymchuk, Director of the Ukrainian Film Foundation Andriy Khalpakhchi, and Head of the Board of Directors of the Nemiroff Holding Oleksandr Glus took part in a press-conference on this occasion, hosted by the Arena Entertainment Center.
Addressing the journalists, Mr. Maksymchuk said that supporting the Ukrainian cinema had become a tradition for the Ukraine 3000 Foundation. He quoted the Foundation’s longstanding cooperation with the Molodist Film Festival, in whose framework the Foundation awards the For Developing National Cinema prize. Mr. Maksymchuk also described the Foundation’s initiative to create the Ukrainian Film Foundation aimed at promoting Ukrainian films globally. In his view, “the cinema art is the best way to tell the world about Ukraine, its past and present.”
Mr. Khalpakhchi spoke about the work of the Ukrainian Film Foundation. “In the six months of its existence the Foundation has made its first steps to tell the world about our past, present and future,” he said. “We are certain that our cooperation with the Nemiroff Company will give us broad opportunities to implement our plans regarding the global popularization of the Ukrainian cinema.” Mr. Khalpakhchi described the Foundation’s plans for the next future, in part, presenting national cinema at the Cannes Film Festival, whose official catalogue will include six Ukrainian films.
In his turn, Mr. Hlus recalled the actions in support of the Ukrainian cinema, held jointly with the Nemiroff Company: the presentation of Ukrainian cinema at Cannes 2007 and the 58th Berlin Film Festival and the Days of the Polish Cinema in Ukraine. “We believe that this cooperation has a great future,” Mr. Hlus said. “The Nemiroff Company has been presenting world culture to Ukraine for many years. Now it’s high time to present Ukraine to the world. Together we can promote the revival of the national cinema, while Nemiroff’s support will let the world know about its attainments and development.”
The heads of the Ukrainian Film Foundation and Nemiroff Company signed a long-term agreement (Memorandum) On Cooperation within the Framework of the Ukrainian Films for the World Project. The agreement envisages joint actions aimed at reviving the Ukrainian cinema, promoting Ukrainian culture abroad, forming and supporting a positive image of Ukraine in the world. Among the events the partners agreed to hold in 2008 are::
- Festivals of Polish films in Ukraine and Ukrainian – in Poland;
- Days of the Ukrainian Cinema in Paris;
- Presenting the Ukrainian cinema at international film festivals in Berlin, Cannes, Moscow, and Venice;
- Ukrainian film festival in Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg);
- Preparing Ukrainian films’ participation at film festivals in Rome, Italy; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Clermont-Ferrand, France; Tampere, Finland; Sofia, Bulgaria; Warsaw, Poland, etc.;
- Grants for studying and trainings at Europe’s cinema schools;
- Releasing the Ukrainian classics and contemporary films on DVD;
- Restoring the Ukrainian classic films;
- Supporting Ukrainian films’ postproduction (Ukrainian subtitles).
The Ukrainian Film Foundation was founded by the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and Molodist International Film Festival. Its foundation was officially announced October 25, 2007. Its major goals are creating a catalogue of Ukrainian films, presenting best films at international film festivals, and promoting the Ukrainian cinema globally.
