Ukraine 3000 Foundation Members Take Part in the 18th World Economic Forum in Krynica
September 11, 2008, the Humanitarian Disaster of the Twentieth Century through the Eyes of Contemporaries discussion panel was held at the 18th World Economic Forum in Krynica, moderated by Head of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation’s History Lessons: Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 program Olesia Stasiuk.
Among other participants of the discussion were Acting Head of Ukrainian Institute of National Memory Ihor Yukhnovsky, Head of Poland's Institute of National Remembrance Janusz Kurtyka, former Prime Minister and Member of Parliament of Estonia Mart Laari, Member of the Board of Directors of the Memorial Association (Russia) Aleksandr Daniel, other Ukrainian and foreign scholars.
In his speech, Mr. Yukhnovsky highlighted the Holodomor manmade famine as genocide against the Ukrainian people, political repressions, and crimes of the Communist Soviet regime. Academician Yukhnovsky’s speech induced a disruptive response from Mr. Daniel, who referred to Ukraine’s stand regarding Holodomor as genocide against Ukrainian “an interpretation,” arguing that it was not a Holodomor but Great Famine in all countries of the former Soviet Union. These speeches triggered a heated discussion by the session participants, mostly representing Russia and Italy.
The 18th World Economic Forum was held in Krynica, Poland, on September 10-13, 2008, its main topic being International Politics and Security. Among its participants were presidents, government heads, and businessmen from Central and Eastern Europe. Among the most urgent issues under discussion were the European energy security along with the political and economical situation in the Central and Eastern Europe. The slogan of this meeting of politicians, economists, and analytics was European Dilemmas. Central Europe: Active partner or a passive spectator? The Forum had on its agenda 120 discussion panels on economic, social, and political topics, with over 2,000 guests from 60 countries in Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa taking part in the event.
