Ukraine 3000 Foundation and Glavred Analytical Agency Present the Holodomor 1932-1933: Ukraine Remembers, the World Recognizes Joint Project
The Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation and Glavred Independent Analytical Agency launch their joint project, Holodomor 1932-1933: Ukraine Remembers, the World Recognizes, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the manmade famine in Ukraine. A presentation and press conference on this event took place June 26, 2008, at Glavred-media press center. Among its participants were Head of the Board of Directors of the Ukraine 3000 Foundation Oleksandr Maksymchuk, Glavred-media Vice President Yuliya Lymar and Deputy Head of the Branch State Archive at the Security Service of Ukraine Serhiy Kokin.
The project was opened with an article by Head of the Supervisory Board of the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation Kateryna Yushchenko, “Ukraine Acts, the World Changes.”
“There are over 20,000 works dedicated to Holodomor theme today. However, most of them are just stating and discussing what happened 75 years ago. Today we need to move to a new level, to reconsider and draw conclusions about those events and also to define and overcome their consequences for our present and future. Though this issue is complicated for studying and reconsidering, we have to do this to heal the nation from that horror. Reviving the memories about Holodomor will be evidence that the Ukrainian people is able to get over all obstacles and win a decent place for itself in the world,” Mr. Maksymchuk said at the presentation.
In her turn, Ms. Lymar said that “the consciously designed terror-famine was one of the most horrible disasters for our people.” “We want people in Ukraine and abroad to know and understand what happened in Ukraine in 1932-1933. I hope that the materials Glavred is going to publish will memorialize millions of our fellow countrymen and serve to renewing historical justice,” she added.
Mr. Kokin spoke about the work conducted by SSU in declassifying and making public archive documents related to Holodomor. He also described their plans for the future, in part, establishing contacts with security services in other countries, where archive documents on the Ukrainian famine might be preserved.
The Holodomor 1932-1933: Ukraine Remembers, the World Recognizes special project was launched by the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation as part of its History Lessons: Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 program. It is a special section of the Glavred Independent Analytical Agency’s website, where historical research papers, interviews, informational, analytical, and polemical materials will be published on a weekly basis within the context of the 75th anniversary of Holodomor. The section’s permanent web address is www.glavred.info/holodomor.
The project is to become a site for involving leading scholars, historians, philosophers, sociologists, and public figures into discussion on this subject. Though it isn’t meant to be purely scientific, its peculiar feature will be withdrawing from political speculations and profanation of this tragedy and, to the opposite, discussion and finding a consensus for the sake of the future. The project is not limited in time and will operate as long as the Holodomor ceases to be a controversial issue for our society.
Soon the special project will feature a news feed of the renewed version of the History Lessons: Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 specialized website (www.holodomor33.org.ua).
