“Launching the Doing Good Starts with You program last September, we realized how timely and important it was for the Ukrainian society,” Mrs. Yushchenko said in her speech. “We are certain that charity is one of the major elements in children’s upbringing. The need to help others, respect for one’s elders, responsibility for one’s community, conscious attitude toward the environment become a part of a child’s personality, if you instill them from her early years.”

May 19, 2008, the Children’s Hospital of the Future Charitable Foundation received the official decision of the Architecture and Town Planning Council at the Ministry of Regions Development, Housing and Building of Ukraine.

Mrs. Kateryna said that the Ukraine 3000 Foundation had initiated the creation of a single rehabilitation space – an integrated program embracing all people with special needs. “While this program is being developed, our Foundation has made a decision to earmark UAH 100,000 for the needs of the visually handicapped people, especially children,” she said.

Welcoming the guests, Mrs. Yushchenko thanked them for their interest to Ukraine and expressed her hope that the event would help them to learn more about Ukraine and its cinema. “We do have something to offer,” she said. “Talented actors, technicians, cameramen – professionals who are now working at world’s best sets. We have great locations and a great desire to take part in co-productions.” Mrs. Kateryna added that Ukraine’s beautiful and sometimes tragic history could become an inexhaustible source of stories waiting to be made into a movie.

“We are happy that Ukraine has finally got its own pavilion at the Cannes Festival and a chance to present its attainments along with future projects,” Mrs. Yushchenko said. “We invite everybody to cooperate with Ukraine, since what we have to offer is not only great stories and ideas for new films, but the experience of Ukrainian professionals.”

Mrs. Yushchenko took a tour of the pavilion and familiarized herself with its work. She talked to representatives of Ukrainian film studios and producers, presented at the pavilion, and also journalists covering the Cannes Film Festival.

Touch and See is the first photo exhibition for the blind in Ukraine. It displays 30 3D photos from Yuri Bilak’s “Ukrainians” series. Every color photo is coupled with its tactile replica, a transparent embossed file made of polymers.

A number of issues were discussed related to the film industry development in Lithuania and Ukraine. Minister Chrivinskas spoke about state support to the cinema and the present situation in the Lithuanian film industry. Mrs. Kateryna, in her turn, described the activities of the Ukrainian Film Foundation, created by the Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation’s initiative, and its current and future projects aimed at creating favorable conditions for Ukrainian and joint films production.

In course of the meeting, the experts gave their evaluation of the project submitted to the contest, noting the importance of non-governmental support for cultural projects, since there are no other grant programs of this kind in Ukraine. Representatives of the winning organizations presented their projects to be implemented with the participation of Ukraine 3000 Foundation and took part in their discussion.
