In her speech at the unveiling, Mrs. Yushchenko thanked the German party for their support in organizing the exhibition and their attention to this topic.
“The world has finally started talking about the Ukrainian tragedy,” she said. “We hope that the next step will be recognition of Holodomor on the level of many countries and most influential international institutions. Recognizing and commemorating the innocent victims is our Christian, public, and human duty.”
Mrs. Kateryna said that the Ukrainian Holodomor genocide was a common pain of the Ukrainian and German peoples. By the data, recently published by SSU, in Donetsk oblast alone 17 settlements of German colonists had been destroyed during the famine.
Head of the VR Committee on European Integration Borys Tarasiuk and acting Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Valentyn Nalyvaychenko also addressed the public. Mr. Tarasiuk passed a petition to President of the Landtag Regina van Dinther on recognizing the Manmade Famine an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.
In course of the unveiling the German Ukrainians made public an open address to the FRG Government on recognizing the Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 a genocide against the Ukrainian people.
After the ceremony, Mrs. Kateryna took part in a memorial service for the victims of the Manmade Famine of 1932-1933 at the parish of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Düsseldorf. Also, Mrs. Yushchenko talked to members of the Ukrainian community in Germany.
The Executed by Hunger: Unknown Genocide of the Ukrainians exhibition was created to inform representatives of foreign countries on the events of 1932-1933 in Ukraine and further promote their recognition as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people. The exhibition has already traveled Brussels, Berlin, Geneva, Washington, Vilnius, and all Ukraine’s oblasts. Its special feature is that the archive documents on this horrible crime of the totalitarian regime are corroborated by witness accounts of the Holodomor survivors.
Mrs. Kateryna Yushchenko and Ukraine 3000 International Charitable Foundation representatives are staying in Germany for a two-days working visit, in course of which they are to visit Düsseldorf and Cologne. Earlier they met with representatives of German business circles at the reception by Land Counselor on Economy and Social Policy of the State of Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rhineland region, Werner Stump.
